Shoot the Lobster and rockypoint Press are proud to present Mise en Scène, a series of artist/writer collaborative prints, projects, and Affiches Uniques produced by novelist/filmmaker Veronica Gonzalez Peña.

In her collaborations, Gonzalez Peña foregrounds the British Psychoanalyst DW Winnicott's theories on the transitional object and creativity through play. Inspired by the cross-pollination of Modernist artists and writers - Gertrude Stein structuring her writing like painting or film for instance, or Virigina Woolf's psychological and painterly concerns - Gonzalez Peña enacts her play by bringing people together to create something completely new. As in many process oriented projects, she often works with a repeating cast of like-minded artists; a feedback loop of the socially generative and generatively social which is foundational to rockypoint's other activities as well which include a reading series (often held at such L.A. institutions as Hop Louie, the Mountain Bar and China Art Objects). All of these activities eventually led her to an art form that is at its center collaborative: filmmaking.

For the Prints Project, Gonzalez Peña brought an artist and writer together to create a collaborative print, including Dan Graham with John Miller, Raymond Pettibon with Dodie Bellam,  Nayland Blake with Lynne Tillman, Jorge Pardo with Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, George Porcari with Chris Kraus, & Servane Mary with Sylvère Lotringer.

For the Affiches Unique Servane Mary and rockypoint Press ran a prints studio which  produced 7 editions for the show. The participants were provided with 22 x 30 sheets of stonehenge paper on which they drew/painted/or wrote; the studio then silk-screened the artist’s chosen image onto the manipulated paper. The artists include Michel Auder, Joanne Greenbaum, Leigh Ledare, Suzanne McClelland, Liam Gillick, Alix Pearlstein, and Aura Rosenberg.

As part of the show STL will virtually screen CORDELIA, Gonzalez Peña’s 2016 film, featuring Michel Auder, Servane Mary, Pat Steir, Douglas Gordon and Penelope Pardo. Available now until Feb 20. There will be additional screenings, readings, and events to follow.

The back room at STL will host work by George Porcari, with Jorge Pardo, Steve Hanson, Tif Sigfrids and Mark Handforth providing introductions to films chosen by Porcari, as well as recordings of rockypoint Readings, filmed by Porcari, including Chris Kraus at China Art Objects and Eileen Myles at Human Resources.

Gonzalez Peña is currently at work on a documentary about Lawrence Weiner.
