PRESS RELEASE

Martos Gallery Los Angeles is pleased to present What’s Wrong With We?, a group exhibition organized by Pierre-Arnaud Doucède on view April 30 – June 6, with an opening reception on Thursday, April 30 from 7-9pm.

In instances of explosive gesture, expressive fluidity, and seemingly uncontrolled projection, What’s Wrong With We? presents raw, stripped down figuration in painting, drawing, and sculpture. Culling from a diverse array of historical periods including Fauvism, Expressionism, and Surrealism these artists construct charged personal narratives where conflict and destruction are manipulated into creative powers.

Using humor to explore the existential sensitivity of art making, each piece eliminates questions of style but remains recognizable as emanations of inner perceptivity. The subject is not so much portrait, but an expression of imagination, which transforms reality and distorts images. Pushing figuration to its abstract edges or wielding anthropomorphic representations, the works of the exhibition form a chorus of voices simultaneously at odds and in sync with one another, echoing from wall to wall – “what’s wrong with we?”
