Shoot the Lobster is pleased to present the inaugural exhibition of Shoot the Lobster UK, SOLAR SOLAR.
The Enlightenment chapter closed. Question Authority, including the Non-God of natural man. The Man-Ray, a child piercing the mind and demanding to be born. Neolithic henges mark the sun’s path in three dimensions, from birth to death and back again, when the burning sun dips under the horizon line, it travels through the underworld of soil, rock, and deep, cold water. The city under the city. It rebirths itself as pink mist and dew. The earth’s core: fire encased in liquid iron, a second sun bound by the immaterial magnetosphere, which, like a scent, encases the globe, protects it from solar flares, draws taut the tensioned line that makes life possible. Don Cupitt talks about solar living as a new apostle’s creed. But it’s also the first way of being. Glasgow’s position as a historical birthplace of the Enlightenment marks an episode in many iterations of this relationship, which casts a long shadow. When we face the Sun, what we desire and is warm and red behind the eyelids, we stand opposite our shadow. We can only see the past, it is our material to work with, we cannot see the future. So we live in the in-between space and have to create and love from a place of in-betweenness: enlightened and dense, near and far, light and dark, presence and absence, material and immaterial, Love and the hollowed out space that it is able to fill. A body made of light.
Solar Solar is meant as an incantation, shedding light on the grouping of international artists based in the UK and NYC.
